Bright Light #3.5: Tales of 2 Austins

With one more week left of August and our Life Unexpected series, it didn’t feel right to close up shop without mentioning Jones and Math, two supporting characters that these cupcakes have grown to really enjoy. Who wouldn’t? Jones is surprisingly charming and sincere, despite his quarterback reputation. And Math is a cuddly, sweater-vest wearing teacher who dispenses heartfelt advice, but also likes to make people laugh and throw back a few beers. We know we aren’t the only ones who are looking forward to reuniting with these characters September 14.

Happy reading! Just one more Life Unexpected entry to go…
Red Velvet’s Five Favorite JONES Moments:
1. It’s the day after Lux shows Jones where Bug grew up. She had told him a story about how one of her foster mothers gave her a cheap locket that she wore constantly when she was younger. And he walks up to her in the hallway, with a new locket to give to her. He never does though because Tasha calls to tell Lux that Bug left. But it was so sweet! I wish he had given it to her.
2. When Jones asks Lux out on a date for the first time. I loved this whole exchange:
Lux: “You know what I mean. You’re Abercrombie. I’m the foster-freak bong girl. There’s an inherent compatibility issue.
Jones: “Really? I thought it was a classic story. Boy meets bong girl, boy tries to kiss bong girl, boy awkwardly asks out bong girl.”
3. After Lux realizes that their date is actually a trip to see Tasha. There’s a moment as she’s hugging Tasha tight where she and Jones exchange a look/smile. It was a subtle moment but you could tell she was looking at him differently.
4. Lux and Jones going to the formal together. The look on Jones’ face when he picks up Lux, their funny dance moves, sitting in the car talking. Great episode!
5. It’s post-awkward-formal and Jones invites Lux over to his place for a party. They play “Suck & Blow” and surprise surprise, Jones “accidentally” kisses Lux during the game. Later he tells her how she’s not an easy person to walk away from (who doesn’t want to hear this?!).

Funfetti’s Five Favorite MATH Moments:
1. From Love Unexpected: Math serenades Cate and Ryan with Paula Adbul’s “Opposites Attract.” Apparently he gave her a copy of the music video on VHS when they were teenagers. He certainly brings some humor to a rehearsal dinner nightmare. And who didn’t love this song and the video (that cat!) back in the day?
2. From Home Inspected: Math cracks the whip after Baze half asses the home inspection with Lux’s social worker. “You have no clue how freaking lucky you are. You have this amazing daughter. You are now forever linked to the most amazing woman on the planet. Everything isn’t a joke, okay? It’s one thing to make Cate deal with it when you were sixteen but it’s freaking pathetic that at 32 to make her do it alone again all over again. Look around Baze. No one is laughing but you.” He tells it like it is.
3. From Bride Unbridled: Math is pretty hysterical during the newlywed game (“I’m not a stalker, just a long time fan”). My favorite part has to be the last question: “What’s your number one relationship deal breaker [with Cate]?” Math writes on his card: The Apocalypse. Love it!
4. From Turtle Undefeated: When Math volunteers to supply the turtles for Baze’s latest attempt to bring business to his bar, he decides to “rescue” the critters from the science lab. Needless to say, the turtles are a bit traumatized. During the races, Math chooses the three-legged turtle and names him “Bolt”, even putting a little lightning decal on him. It was pretty adorable.
5. From Bong Intercepted: This is probably my favorite Math moment in Season 1. While he can be the funny, cute sidekick, he is also a voice of reason. He cheers Lux up when when she is feeling particular unwanted in several aspects of her new life. “Good things happen in really messed up ways.” He just has a way of explaining things that helps comfort people at their lowest. Also, how cute was it that he got Lux’s bong lamp back to her?
