LUX Reviews: 2.4 Team Rebounded
Funfetti:
The more I think about it, the more I realize how much I loved this episode. Sure, it was a little soap opera-y but I also get a strong feeling something huge is about to happen.
First, Cate and Ryan. I could probably go on and on about them. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that they rushed into their marriage, really rushed. I think Cate was trying to maintain some control over her life when Baze and Lux appeared once again. Like having them there was just an added bonus, not a game changer.
I really just want these two to TALK. Lock them away for a week and discuss shit, because they are not getting anywhere. It’s like they are married independently (which makes no sense). Something has got to change. And I don’t necessarily think Cate lying about wanting children and making Ryan think they are actually TRYING for children is the way to do it (duh). Cate continues to commit these ultimate marriage sins, digger herself deeper and deeper. I’m not sure what has to happen for her to wake up. I really don’t. (I’m actually scared of that moment.)
As for Lux, so curious about this Valerie connection. Initially, I feared there was abuse connected to this foster family, but after seeing snippets of that note and the picture, I’m really not sure what to make of it. As writers of the show, I can imagine it’s difficult to weave together a character’s complex past as well as this crazy, involved present. Kudos. I am so hooked on this storyline. (Sidenote: Welcome back Tasha! Also hooray to Ryan and Cate for helping Lux’s friend out.)
Um, since when did Baze become everyone’s cheerleader? Loving it! Started to like Kelly a bit this week (just realized Cate does not have one girlfriend at the moment; where is her sis?). And Math, my adorable, lovely, dreamy Math. Paige is not the girl for you. Period. Anyone who would kiss you just to end a date? No way. There is someone out there for you, (Writers? Am I right?) who will love your sweaters, and love of reading. No fear!
One more thing before I say goodbye: how much did I love the confetti for losing the basketball game? It was pretty hilarious, brilliant, and another reason why Life Unexpected is so unique. I seriously just feel joy when I watch (even when Cate and Lux are fucking up).
Bring on the crossover; I’m ready!
P.S. I did forget to mention Ryan saying Lux was “not his kid”. That’s a heartbreaker. I mean there are many wounds that need healing when it comes to all that has happened to these characters, but Ryan’s insecurities… I can’t imagine how he feels. It’s a strange position for anyone to be in… but after last episode, I really thought maybe he felt more a part of things. When will that happen for real?
Red Velvet:
What is Lux not saying about her former foster parent?! (Mom? Really?) That was my first thought when the episode ended. Quickly followed by, oh Cate - this is going to blow up in your face (soon!).
Huge things happened in this week’s episode of Life Unexpected. Mainly between Ryan and Cate (Kerr and Shiri - you were amazing in every scene!) With each passing episode, it’s getting harder to understand why these two got married in the first place. How is it that they’ve never discussed money, religion or KIDS before? Didn’t they date for three years? It should come as no surprise that Ryan wants a big family and Cate doesn’t. And it’s easy to see both sides (okay, maybe Funfetti had to help me see Ryan’s). I can’t blame the guy for wanting a family of his own with Cate. He’s right - he may be a father figure to Lux but ultimately Baze will always be her Dad. As for Cate, getting pregnant as teenager with no one there for you is a traumatizing experience. It’s understandable she’d be scared and hesitant. But lying and pressuring each other won’t fix things. I’m sensing a lot more trouble coming up for them.
As for Lux, I did not see this twist coming. Given her reaction at seeing her former foster mom and urgency at getting Tasha out of there, I assumed something bad must’ve happened. So you can imagine my surprise when Lux got a heartfelt letter from “Mom” which included a happy photo of them. What happened here? Is the letter misleading or did Lux push her away in the hopes of finding her biological parents? I really hope we find out. Aside from that, it was great seeing Lux playing basketball and hanging out with her best friend again. Even her tutoring session with Eric wasn’t too bad. (Where was Jones? I feel like he would’ve attended Lux’s first game.)
Also - loved Baze and Math. Them coaching the girls basketball team together was an amazing idea. I enjoyed every single Baze pep talk and his post-game hug with Lux (and Cate! Did you notice that?) was adorable. Then, poor Math. Just when I thought I couldn’t hate Paige anymore, she finds a way to make herself more annoying. Math can do so much better. I hope they kick her out of their apartment ASAP.
So excited for next week’s crossover. I’m really looking forward to the Haley and Cate bonding over their Nates. Until then!
