Red Velvet #6: Favor #WEverb11

Favor.

What was your favorite month of 2011? Why did it beat out all 11 other months?

Would it be strange to choose December, even though the month just started? It’s the month I look forward to every year. Aside from the obvious (Christmas!), there are all these other traditions in my life that I get excited about…

Every year one of my college roommates throws a party filled with good food (her dad’s chicken salad is amazing) and singing Christmas carols around the piano in her living room. She started inviting us our senior year of college (I think) and we’ve been going ever since.

My best friends and I have our own holiday dinner where we pick a fancy restaurant, get all dolled up and exchange presents.  Then inevitably, we go to someone’s house afterwards and talk for hours.  We’ve all been so busy this year.. so it makes the times when we can all get together extra special.

My cousins and I decided to do a Secret Santa gift exchange this year.  Partially to save money (just being honest!) but I actually think it’s a lot of fun.  My person is someone I tend to get gift cards and sweaters for but this time, I put some extra thought into it and I’m really excited to see the expression on his face when he opens his gift.

And course, the vacation days.  I always take the last week and a half of December off.  I’ve already got trips into the city planned, might go see a musical and other Christmas parties to go to.  It’s nice to actually have time for myself and not have to think about work (or commuting).

The festivities officially begin this weekend.. and I can’t wait!

Throwback Thursday: Mini Funfetti

Red Velvet is in need of something funny & light this week. (She’s a little under the weather.) So she decided to entertain herself with one of my journal revisits from WAY back (sweet of her, really!)… Hope you enjoy Mini Funfetti!

This week, I was going for lighthearted. Nothing says lighthearted like journals from when you were 12, right? Ha. Or so I thought. First of all, I was always boy crazy. Second, while I love my inner geek… some people were really mean to me! And third, I had a fun frenemie thing going on with a girl named Kristen (yes, that’s her real name) who once told me I needed to get my face slapped for being so rude. Um, thanks? (Ask anyone, I was always way nicer to her than anyone else!) Another funny thing: I started my countdowns for Christmas early back then too. Some things just never change. Get excited for some kiddie-Funfetti moments…

P.S. Only 4 days left to enter our giveaway! Check it out!

Happy Holidays to You!

We just wanted to take a quick moment to send warm wishes to our followers, readers, and friends who are celebrating the Christmas holidays! We hope you enjoy the time with family and friends, eat some sugar cookies, and that Santa is very kind to you.

Don’t forget -  ”The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.” (Even if you don’t have the prettiest voice!)

Signing off until next week,

Happy Golden Days: Holiday Soundtracks

(source)

Funfetti:  If you are anything like me, you’re itching to play holiday songs before you really should (ahem, before Thanksgiving, around the house in July, etc.). I strongly believe a day without holiday music is a day wasted. It makes me feel at ease, content, happy, excited. And nostalgic. When it came to writing this blog, I had to ask Red Velvet if we could increase our playlists by five more songs. I just have too many to choose from. Thankfully, she agreed. It’s always so hard to narrow my favorite songs down. In fact, last year, I made a coworker three mixed CDs when I was planning on making her one (ha ha). My best mixes include a combination of classic and modern tunes. Here’s my list (in no particular order):

1. Andy Williams: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. A classic that encompasses the entire season.
2. Judy Garland: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. This is my absolute favorite version of this song. Judy sings it in “Meet Me in St. Louis” (a great movie if you haven’t seen it). Her singing is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Favorite line: “Through the years / we all will be together / if the fates allow.”
3. Elton John: Step into Christmas. Such a fun, upbeat Christmas song. Not played on the radio nearly enough. I just love the opening.
4. Ruben Studdard: This Christmas. A romantic and sweet song. “My world is filled with cheer and you this Christmas. And as I look around, your eyes outshine the town, they do this Christmas.”
5. Mariah Carey: Joy to the World. Mariah’s holiday album is a staple in my collection. I love how the song starts off slow, and later builds up with the help of a choir. A merry, full sound.
6. The Carpenters: Christmas Waltz. I only recently discovered this song last year, and it is in my top 3 now. “It’s the time of year when the world falls in love, every song you hear seems to say Merry Christmas. May your New Year dreams come true and this song of mine in three-quarter time wishes you and yours the same thing too.” Simple melody, a few sweet words.
7. Mannheim Steamroller: Carol of Bells. A beautiful song, no matter who sings it. (Another one of my favorite versions is in “The Santa Clause” movie.”)
8. Aly & AJ: Greatest Time of Year. A fun (and new!) Christmas song with a rock flair. Favorite lyric: “Joy to the world and everyone / Lift up your hearts and feel the love / It’s our favorite way, to spend the holiday.”
9. Vince Guaraldi Trio: Linus & Lucy. I love “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. It’s been a favorite movie of mine since I was a little kid. Best part ever? Those silly kids dancing before pageant rehearsal. Here’s the song!
10. Eddie Money: Everybody Loves Christmas. Another rock carol. Fun, upbeat. (Also used in the closing credits of “The Santa Clause 2”.)
11. Johnny Mathis: Sleigh Ride. Johnny Mathis is such a huge part of my family’s traditions. His voice brings me back, in anything he sings. But I do love “Sleigh Ride”. Love this part: “It’s grand, just holding your hand.”
12. Whitney Houston: Who Would Imagine a King. Whitney sings this in “A Preacher’s Wife” and it’s such a beautiful song. (Check out Katharine McPhee’s version, too!)
13. Nat King Cole: The Christmas Song. Mr. FF absolutely adores Nat. And I don’t blame him. It’s not a Christmas compilation without him. “And so it’s been said, many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you.”
14. Boyz II Men: Let it Snow. Great version of this wintry song. Love the harmonies!
15. NSYNC: All I Want is You This Christmas. Can’t get through one of these lists without an NSYNC song. Their holiday album is another one of my staples. It was actually difficult to pick a song because I love them all so much. “Don’t you know the best thing you can give to me… nothing else will do. All I want is you this Christmas.” (P.S. NSYNC, I need you to all reunite and sing these songs live, please. Thanks!)

Red Velvet: I have this personal rule where I will not listen to any Christmas songs before Thanksgiving.  And it’s not that I don’t love Christmas music (because I do!), I just like to focus on one holiday at a time.  But trust me, once everyone left my house after Thanksgiving dinner, I was in my room putting together my Christmas music playlist and trying to find new songs to download (didn’t find many new ones, boo!). One thing I quickly noticed was that most of my favorite ones are pop covers of traditional songs, or non-traditional songs in general.  Here are some of my faves:

1.  Mariah Carey: All I Want For Christmas Is You.  To me, this is a classic and no matter how many times I hear it, it never fails to make me want to get up and dance.
2.  The Weepies: All That I Want.  I love this song and was listening to it all year round.  Funnily (or possibly sadly) enough, I didn’t realize it was a Christmas song until recently.  Even though the beginning and end of the song mention Christmastime. (Hah!)
3.  Fiona Apple: Frosty The Snowman.  When you think Fiona Apple, happy Christmas songs don’t exactly come to mind.  More like dark and angry.  But I love her take on this one.
4.  Carrie Underwood: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.  I have her whole Walmart edition Christmas album (there’s about 5 or 6 songs on it) and it’s great! She’s got an amazing voice but this one is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
5.  Christina Aguilera: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. This has been kind of a staple Christmas album for me since high school (back when Christina was my favoritest singer ever).  I may not listen to her as much anymore but I still love her takes on classic holiday songs.
6.  Jordin Sparks: I’ll Be Home For Christmas.  She sings it pretty straight forward, completely traditional.  But her voice sounds so pretty while doing it.
7.  Jimmy Eat World: Last Christmas.  When I think Christmas songs, this one is at the top of my list.  I’m not even sure why but it always gets my head bopping.
8.  ‘NSync: Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.  It’s such a fun, happy song.  How do you not like this one?
9.  Kelly Clarkson: My Grown-Up Christmas List.  I’ve heard a couple versions of this song but I like Kelly Clarkson’s best.
10.  Britney Spears: My Only Wish (This Year).  Again, just like the ‘NSync song.. it’s so fun and happy.  I love pop Christmas songs!
11.  Katharine McPhee: O Come All Ye Faithful.  I don’t think a lot of people realize what a great  voice she has but it’s definitely showcased here.
12.  Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson: Winter Song.  I love all things Sara Bareilles so it shouldn’t come as surprise that I love this song.
13.  Jason Mraz:  Winter Wonderland.  A classic and as always, Jason Mraz adds his own little twist to it.
14.  Taylor Swift:  Christmases When You Were Mine.  I’m not her biggest fan these days but it’s a sweet little song that I enjoy.
15.  Marie Digby: Bring Me Love.  Another underrated singer (she’s great live)! She wrote this song and released it on iTunes a couple years ago.  It’s a fun song about wanting Santa to bring her love.

Happy Golden Days: Traditions

Hi friends! Welcome to our December series… how could it be dedicated to anything other than the holidays? We hope that as you prep for the holidays or are in the middle of celebrating them (Happy Hanukkah!), that you’ll share some of your favorite moments from this time of year with us! Good luck with the online shopping, trying to get your tree lights to work, and finding time for all the fun!

Funfetti:

When I think of holiday traditions, it’s hard to think of holding them anywhere but my childhood home. I remember being young and imagining waking up Christmas Day, married, and I still lived there. Although from the looks of my dreams, I had inherited the house and moved up into my parent’s bedroom.

From my parents, I certainly learned the importance of a detail. Every year, my dad and I would go get our tree one day during the week from our church. My mom would always stay home, and later when my sister was old enough, she tagged along too. It was always so exciting to pick a tree. I remember the first time I could grab a tree by trunk by myself, smell the pine. Sometimes the people working at the church would give us part of the trunk to keep in the car. Christmas tree scent everywhere.

My dad would always put the lights on the tree. I would set up the nativity. Later, my sister got that job and I did the decorating on top of the fireplace. Make the perfect presentation of well collected snow globes, candles, handmade ornaments. We put up the ornaments together (there were a few occurrences when we had to do this more than once because our tree fell over). Perry Como on our CD player, Johnny Mathis on the tape deck.

Every Christmas Eve, my parents hosted my dad’s sister’s family. We would go to church shortly after a Polish meal, my parents diligently made from scratch that morning. Later, we would exchange gifts and have seconds. My cousins and I would listen to Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You and every year, my cousins remind me they danced to that song once (yes, that got annoying). Santa would drive along our town on a fire engine and my mom and aunt would race each other to the door, hoping for a wave. Sometimes coffee flying everywhere.

Without a doubt, a video camera would wake me every Christmas morning. My dad was always up first and then there was my mom armed to capture every single moment. (Ugh, I hated that. I have never seen one of those videos!) We’d open our gifts, have some breakfast, watch the Disney parade, and head to my Grandma’s. Until about ten years ago, after she passed away, and we tried to start another new tradition. Honestly? That one didn’t catch on and we’re still working on it. It’s getting there.

Tradition is a funny thing. It’s constant, and it grows. But it also needs to be flexible. Because things change. Like me moving out, or my cousins getting older and having kids. Or sadly, death. I’ve grown to depend so much on these small moments, a tiny fraction of my entire year that I so look forward to.

Red Velvet:

I love Christmas - it’s the one holiday that always fills me with excitement, no matter how old I get.  As a kid, it was all about Santa, opening presents and spending time with my family.  Now, it’s about that plus friends, food (baking!) and creating my own traditions.

I decorate the Christmas tree.  My family had been using the same fake Christmas tree and same old (somewhat falling apart) ornaments for as long as I can remember.  I’d come home one day from school (or work) and just find the tree set up.  Last year I decided that I was going to take charge.  I went to Target and bought a new tree (didn’t realize there’d be so many choices!) and new ornaments (including some Hello Kitty ones, of course).  Then my family and I actually decorated the tree together.  Even my aunt, uncle and two cousins came over to help that night and have dinner with us.  I’m planning to do this again this year. It’s how I imagine putting up the Christmas tree should be like - with family and some holiday music playing in the background (and me nitpicking about how everything should look).

Christmas parties.  Specifically, non-family ones.  I never went to any growing up.  It was always just Christmas Eve/Day spent with my mom’s side of the family.  During college, I was invited to a friend’s annual family open house.  Every second Sunday of December, they host a big party, with plenty of food and wine (and more food).  But my favorite part of the night is when we gather in the living room, singing Christmas carols while my friend’s mother plays the piano.  She even prints out the lyrics to all the songs beforehand and makes music books for the guests to read from.  It’s become a precious and very warm tradition (like a scene right out of a Christmas movie!) that I look forward to each year.

Holiday dinner with my best friends.   The four of us started these holiday dinners a year after we graduated from college.  We pick a restaurant (cue long email thread as we narrow down our choices), get dressed up and exchange presents.  Almost every year is different.  One time we made it a whole day event (pedicures, blowouts and getting ready at my house).  Another we played Rock Band after exchanging gifts.  Now we’re doing Secret Santa.  I love that we have this tradition together and four years later, we still make time for it.  If I had my way, we’ll keep having these dinners until we’re old and gray (and still wear fancy dresses for them!).

Even though it always amazes me how quickly the Decembers seem to come each year (I feel like it was JUST summer!), I’m glad it’s here.  Can’t wait to get started on this year’s round of traditions!
