Friendly Lessons

By: Red Velvet

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs lately about the importance (and awesomeness) of having a group of best friends.  I’ve written about the same thing myself  on here and how grateful I am to have the ones I currently do.  But it got me thinking about my high school days and all the “bad” friends I had to go through before finding people I really connected with.  It even crossed my mind while out to dinner with my best friends last week.  It’s funny to think but I probably wouldn’t have these girls in my life if it weren’t for those awful experiences.  They taught me a lot about myself and who I should consider a friend, much less a “best friend”.

My first experience with a friendship ending wasn’t about me so much.  It was about two girls I had also gone to grammar school with and for reasons I don’t even remember, one person didn’t like the other anymore.  I, being in the middle, had to choose a side.  So I did… and I’m still friends with that person to this day.  I can’t say I regret the choice, all things considered, but it probably could’ve been (and should’ve been) handled a lot differently.

Lesson learned:  While it all worked out, real friends wouldn’t make you choose between them.

Maintaining the Sisterhood

By: Red Velvet

One of my favorite books (and movies) is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  It’s about four best friends who have known each other their entire lives and how they stay friends as they grow up and change.  I love this story because it reminds me of my own best friends.  Except replace “their entire lives” with “since college” and remove all references to magical jeans.  But otherwise, it’s pretty much perfect in that it captures the beautiful friendship they (and we) share.  I would think most girls would relate to a story like this one.

Lately, I’ve been realizing that’s not always true.

(A Friendship) Through the Years

By: Red Velvet

It seems like every time I log onto Facebook these days, someone new is announcing their engagement or unveiling their “married” status.  I’m nowhere near that point but I do like to think about it.  What my wedding would be like, my dream dress, who’s going to be in my bridal party.  Especially the latter.  I remember growing up, knowing exactly who was going to be my Maid of Honor.  No question about it - it was going to be my oldest friend, who I’ve known since I was 7 years old.

Now?  My answer to that question is different.  Yes, she’s still my friend but the Maid of Honor is supposed to be the person that knows you best.  And when I hung out with her this past weekend for the first time in 3 months, it got me thinking about why she isn’t that person anymore.

Bright Light #3.5: Tales of 2 Austins

With one more week left of August and our Life Unexpected series, it didn’t feel right to close up shop without mentioning Jones and Math, two supporting characters that these cupcakes have grown to really enjoy. Who wouldn’t? Jones is surprisingly charming and sincere, despite his quarterback reputation. And Math is a cuddly, sweater-vest wearing teacher who dispenses heartfelt advice, but also likes to make people laugh and throw back a few beers. We know we aren’t the only ones who are looking forward to reuniting with these characters September 14.

Happy reading! Just one more Life Unexpected entry to go…
