Couple of Crumbs

Hi! Welcome to our little blog, run by two old friends who just want to have a place to write... anything we please. Thanks for stopping by!

XOXO: TV Couples

Welcome to February’s monthly series - XOXO! Since February is (supposedly) the most romantic month of the year, we decided that our series should be all about the love. (For the record, we cupcakes don’t believe in the V-Day hype. We love every day of the year!) Originally, we were going to write about our favorite chick flicks until genius hit! What about our favorite fictional couples? There are so many relationships we love on TV, in books, movies.  It was the perfect choice!

So here we are with this week’s entry about our favorite TV couples. Enjoy!

Meredith & Derek, Grey’s Anatomy
By: Funfetti

Derek: What never happened? You sleeping with me? Or you throwing me out this morning? Because both are fond memories I’d like to hang on to.

We first meet Meredith and Derek after a one-night stand. He’s cute; she’s cute and about thirty minutes later, she finds out she just slept with her boss. Hm. Issue. Especially as a new intern in the hospital, and the daughter of a surgical goddess. I liked them immediately. The banter. The flirting.  It’s hard for me to look away from a relationship chase. Paired with the forbidden factor, they had me at hooked at the first pillow plop on McDreamy’s tush.

Derek: “I want to marry you. I want to have kids with you. I want to build us a house. I want to settle down and grow old with you. I want to die when I’m 110 years old in your arms. I don’t want 48 uninterrupted hours, I want a lifetime!”

Except I started watching Grey’s Anatomy during Season 3. This was after Addison returned, Derek broke up with Meredith in an attempt to fix things with his wife, and Denny died. I seriously had no idea who Denny was! Or what was going on. In a month, I managed to catch up on the first two seasons before finally getting it. Meredith and Derek had to get together. Had to. Their chemistry was undeniable. I felt it all the time. They had to be together.

It’s pretty safe to say that Meredith and Derek are the most real out of the other TV couples I’ve seen in the past or currently watch. They both have flaws. They don’t hide them. Even in adulthood, they are aware that they both have work to do. Things to get overcome. Derek goes back to his wife, even after she cheated on him, because it was the right thing to do. You want to get mad. But it’s actually pretty stand-up of him (even after he never mentioned Addison to Meredith before she showed up). Meredith conceals most information about her mom’s illness, she has pronounced Daddy issues, and she loves tequila. They are messy. But I like that. I always felt like the two could help each other… when they finally got to a place where they could be together. Trust each other and in the fact that they could have a relationships that lasts.

And eventually it happened. They both agreed to commit.

Meredith: Where have you been?! I’ve been waiting and waiting for you! And I did this stupid, embarrassing, humiliating, corny thing and I was just gonna tell you that this over here is our kitchen and— and this is our living room… And over there - that’s the room where our kids could play. I had this whole thing about ‘I was gonna build us a house’ but I don’t build houses because I’m a surgeon! And now I’m here feeling like a lame-ass loser… I got all whole and healed - And you don’t show up! And now it’s all ruined cause you took so long to come home! And I couldn’t even find that bottle of champagne!

There’s sometimes a risk when you let a couple finally get together on a show. Will they get boring? Will you forget about them entirely? How do you maintain a level of intrigue? I happen to like the lovey married-on-a-post-it note thing we have going on with Meredith and Derek. They are acting their age, and trying to have babies. She knows how to tell him he’s screwing up, and he is constantly convincing her that her uterus is not broken. It really works. They are a real couple with real problems. And even if this means no more “will they, won’t they” storylines… I like seeing them tackle life as a team, support each other in their careers. And, of course, laugh and kiss and sleep in bed together (even when Christina joins in).

Here are a few of my favorite DerMer moments. Geez! It was hard to narrow it down.

Peter & Olivia, Fringe
By: Red Velvet

There aren’t a lot of current TV couples to ship right now (IMHO!) but these two are at the top of my (very short) list.  Peter Bishop (played by OUR  love Joshua Jackson) is a former con artist with a genius IQ, now working for the FBI.  He’s also from an alternate universe (his father from this universe stole him when his own son died). Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is a dedicated FBI agent who is a bit of a loner and has a complicated past (abusive stepfather, experimented on as a child by Peter’s father). She has special mental capabilities and can see things from the other universe.  They are also both extremely guarded people, with trust issues.

What can I say, they make quite the pair.

Their relationship has been a slow (slow…) burn and they still haven’t quite gotten together yet.  They started off as two people thrown into the craziness of Fringe division, became friends and partners and later developed feelings for each other.  It’s all very Scully and Mulder-esque (so I’ve heard, never got into The X-Files).  What I like about their relationship is that they opened up to each other and developed these feelings in a natural, non-teen-angsty way.  Their relationship is second to the science fiction of the show.  But it’s definitely there, underneath the surface, in their scenes together.  Then they finally kissed (!) and admitted they belonged together.

Cut to season three and their relationship has been thrown for a loop.  Alternate Universe Olivia (known as Faux-Livia) switched bodies with this universe’s Olivia right as she and Peter were about to embark on a relationship. The truth is out in the open now but the damage has been done.  Peter has conflicting feelings as to who he’s supposed to be in love with and Olivia is just.. hurt and angry (can you blame her?). This is probably the strangest love triangle ever. Not to mention, who Peter “chooses” decides the fate of that Olivia’s universe.  (No pressure or anything.) All I know is, I’m still rooting for Peter and Olivia to work it out.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes on Fringe: click here. (I’d embed except every clip I’ve checked has embedding disabled!)

Another video I love but can’t embed! Walter (Peter’s father) and Peter discuss Olivia. Funny clip - Walter ships P/O too!

Remembering the Creek: Our Series Finale

Well, we’ve inevitably come to the end of our first series. Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Dawson’s Creek again. It’s been quite a trip. We reminisced about the beginning, talked about what we liked, what we didn’t like, and discussed (our favorite) the music. Hey, even Joshua Jackson has caught the bug (SEE Pacey-Con)!

Now for our last entry. As promised, here’s how the series inspired us and brought us together. And because we are in way too deep when it comes to this show, where we think the characters are now… seven years after the season finale. Thanks for reading! (Stay tuned for our new series starting next week!)

Remembering the Creek: The Music

Music was an integral part of Dawson’s Creek. Practically a main character. While Paula Coles’ “I Don’t Wanna Wait” was always a questionable choice for a theme song… it even grew on us after awhile. The show was genius for blending songs of new artists (some who don’t even exist anymore) and some ridiculously awesome old standbys (Dave Matthews Band, Everclear, Joni Mitchell, Barenaked Ladies, James Taylor). Not to mention, such fitting choices enhanced all of the most important scenes of the show.

For part 3 of our Dawson’s Creek series, these cupcakes have decided to make their own individual playlists, filled with their favorite music from the show. Twenty songs a piece, some of them overlapping, but still plenty different.

Back to the Creek: The Beginning

We’ve decided to go back to “our roots” with our latest blog experiment. Every month, we will feature a new “series” - a collection of posts about a TV show, movies, cooking, books, etc.

Both of us have been hit with some moments of nostalgia lately, so we’ve decided to start our blog series with a tribute to Dawson’s Creek. Not only was it our favorite show way back when, but… our passion for it is how we became friends in the first place (more on that later)!
