Looking Back: LUX Cast

By: Red Velvet

The two of us have been missing Life Unexpected lately and were desperate to spotlight the show again in SOME way. So after much back and forth, we thought thought it would be fun to backtrack and write about what the LUX cast did before, and (in a bittersweet way) what they’ve got coming up in the (near!) future. I just love this cast so much and how they brought the characters of Cate, Baze, Ryan and Lux to life.  Right before the show started, I remembered thinking that Shiri Appleby would always be Liz Parker and Kerr Smith would always be Jack McPhee in my mind. But they totally proved me wrong.  They just gave me more characters and another show to fall in love with.  And of course, LUX introduced me to Kristoffer Polaha and Britt Robertson (I don’t know how I didn’t hear about them before this!).  So it was fun to go back and reminisce about my old WB shows (as always) and also dig into Kris & Britt’s pre-LUX days.

 Shiri Appleby

The first time I saw Shiri Appleby was on Roswell, a show that quickly became one of my favorites on the WB.  It was about the lives of three regular teenagers, Liz (Shiri) Parker, Maria DeLuca and Alex Whitman, and the three aliens they befriended, Max Evans, Isabel Evans and Michael Guerin.  I re-watched the entire series recently on Netflix and I still love it (though they did have their low points - Season 3 anyone?).  But my favorite part of the show was always Shiri (I loved that she was this petite science geek who wrote in a journal) and her relationship with Max.  They had the whole star-crossed lovers thing down to a T.

Kristoffer Polaha

The only thing I remember of his pre-LUX days is a cameo on Roswell (and apparently Angel, House, Bones - I watch all these shows, how did I miss him?!).  But Funfetti recommended his made-for-TV movie, America’s Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story (she has a thing for the Kennedys).  I haven’t seen it yet but I’ll be sure to check it out (if I can find it).  In the mean time, here’s a little clip from the movie.  He’s so young and cute here! But I’ll always love him best as Baze.

Kerr Smith

Of course I am going to say.. Dawson’s Creek! It is by far the best thing he’s been in before LUX. Besides, my only other recommendation would be Final Destination and I don’t think it’s worth watching (sorry Kerr!).  But there was always something lovable about Jack McPhee.  He was kind of a dork at first, stole Joey from Dawson (I’m anti-Dawson so I didn’t mind that) and later became one of the bestest friends a girl could ask for (Jen was so lucky).  If you haven’t watched Dawson’s Creek before, WHAT PLANET HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING ON? Ahem. You should definitely check it out. (See: our Dawson’s Creek series!)

(Love the first few minutes! They were my other favorite relationship on Dawson’s Creek.)

Britt Robertson

Again, I didn’t know Britt until LUX premiered but right before that, she filmed a movie called Avalon High.  It’s a made-for-TV Disney movie based on a book by Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries!) and takes a modern twist on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  Seems fun and cute! (Just what you’d expect from the Disney Channel.  I’m a sucker for these kinds of movies.)

Or if you want more of a throw back, she also played one of Steve Carrell’s daughters in the  movie, Dan in Real Life.

(The audio is a little off)

Don’t forget to check back on Thursday for Funfetti’s post on what we can look forward to from our favorite LUX actors & actresses!

Missing LUX

Remember when Tuesdays meant looking forward to a new episode of Life Unexpected? It really wasn’t that long ago that this was our reality, but for some reason, it feels like eons, right? But rejoice! The complete first & second season were released on DVD TODAY. Woo! Have you picked up your copy yet?

Anyway, we thought it would be fun to travel back in time and link up our blogs from our Life Unexpected series… back before Season 2 even started. Hope you enjoy! And for the record, WE FREAKING MISS THIS SHOW.

Funfetti’s Life Unexpected’s Season Finale Review

From Liz Tigelaar’s LIFE UNEXPECTED page.

I started watching Life Unexpected on the weekend of my last birthday. I was feeling pretty homesick, and had DVRed a few weeks of the show. Mr. FF was nice enough to sit and watch with me – I was the birthday girl – and this is how my love of the show was born.

Here I am a year later. Less homesick. A lot closer to being married, and about to celebrate another birthday. Now it is my TV lineup that is feeling incomplete and unfamiliar. As of right now, Life Unexpected will no longer be included in it. It’s been an absolute joy to watch an original series with character that had such chemistry (on and off screen). It was touching, and funny and certainly had a way of bringing me comfort when a lot of new changes were thrust upon me.

I’m really no good at good-byes, or change for that matter. So I guess all I can do is celebrate a well-done series and bask in the two hours I just spent re-watching the final episodes.

What I noticed most is that this show is a love story. Not of Cate and Baze – although that was a part of it. It was the love story of a family. A unique one, sure. Everyone in this show was basically thrown into this family and no one kicked and screamed. Instead, they tried. All the time. Even if they were wrong, and messed up. They learned, they fought. There were misunderstandings and breakthroughs. But they never gave up. That’s the best kind of love story. One that may not be so conventional, but one that is worth the sacrifice and compromise. Worth the rerouting of many lives.

I think this theme actually got lost a little along the way during Season 2. I know the network kings demanded more drama, but I missed the love story. Even if Cate and Baze were not going to be together, I would have liked to see them grow within their friendship and their job as parents to Lux. Two people can successfully lean on each other without being in a relationship, and I am always going to be left to wonder about this perspective. (Example: after Emma left in “Affair Remembered” and Cate found out she lost her baby, there could have been a Cate and Baze scene.)

These last two episodes did provide a lot of Lux and Cate time, as well as Lux and Baze time. Lately, there was a lot of that missing too. I have been continually impressed by the acting talents of Shiri and Britt through the series. But they both shone in their final scenes together. Their chemistry is impeccable and emotionally, they just feed off each other so well. I can’t even handle it sometimes. It’s a big joke that they look nothing alike as mother and daughter, but in this scene, I can see the relation. Their characters are so alike, and have had to go through such dire situations and growth in their lives. And Baze. Up until Life Unexpected, I had only seen Kris in his Lifetime movie about John Kennedy Jr. and he has completely blown me away. His paternal instincts are right on, and I love ANY scene with him and Lux… even when they are driving in the car to school and he tells her she threw Emma’s affair with his dad in his face for the wrong reasons. Their closeness is always apparent; his depth of protection and affection for her is so pure. I was more than glad to get my fill of these scenes.

Now, I’m not sure if my next complaint exists because I feel so connected to the show, or just because… it’s true. I know the crew heard very last minute that they were not getting a back 9 and quickly altered things to close up some storylines. But it all felt a little rushed. (In fact, a friend who listens to my love of LUX turned into the last 2 shows and said the same thing. She’s not even an avid viewer.) Mostly, I’m wondering about the choice to include Julia’s pregnancy. To have Ryan say he is committed to Cate no matter what, and see two years later, obviously he is with Julia. I would have liked to see Cate deal more with her miscarriage, and the impossibility of more children. (I didn’t feel like her and Ryan’s reactions to the news were very organic or realistic. And maybe an appearance by her mother?)

I know many didn’t love the two-year jump. I could have gone either way. It would have been nice to end with the cast fixing up the bar and Cate coming in to talk to Baze (with or without the Julia news). Sharing a drink on the deck. On the other hand, I was so thrilled to see the two of them end up together (although, again… their chemistry is so strong and the chase would have been wonderful to see). Did Alice really have to end up with Math? (Everyone knows I have love for Math… in fact, I’m wondering why he couldn’t have been paired up with a wonderful blogger [a stretch] named after a cupcake?) Would have also liked to see Cate’s mom and sister there. Loved seeing Lux give her speech, especially after the learning challenges she once faced. I felt like a proud mother (and certainly cried like one too).

You know, if there wasn’t a two-year jump, people would have complained too. So what if it was so fairy tale and all wrapped up with a bow? The show deserved that much after its own network failed to stand behind it and nurture it. In fact, I think my biggest complaint about the fast-forward is that it wasn’t long enough. I could have used more than 2 minutes. Maybe half of an episode? Too many unanswered questions were left, when I think the jump was supposed to accomplish a feeling of finality. Then again, my emotions could be toying with me causing me to want more, more, and more of this show. (For all those wondering, my mascara is NOT waterproof.)

Just a few little tid-bits before I wrap up:

- If you have been following my reviews, you would know that I was not a fan of the Lux and Eric pairing at all. I thought it was typical, and completely unnecessary. But I think I was most concerned that this was all about physical attraction, and when I realized it wasn’t, I started to really like how the relationship took shape. He really was there for her; he was looking out for her. This was more than some passing attraction. In fact, it wasn’t about sex at all. They had a connection. (This is what made me so angry when I read a few reviews after the episode. I felt like a lot of jaded people were commenting on an emotion they had never experienced. I say: can it.) It took a real man to finally admit what was going on, and walk away. Even if it meant never talking to Lux again. (He also could have disclosed to Baze that they never slept together, but he didn’t. He took Baze’s anger with grace.) The scene when Lux confronts Eric on the doorstep of his apartment is one of my favorites of the entire series. You can tell how much they feel for each other, but how torn Eric is by what is weighing on his conscience.
- Even though I’ve been a fan of Cate and Baze since the beginning, I really enjoyed Emma Caulfield on the show. She brought so much hope into Baze’s life and really tapped into his own realization that he was a worthwhile man. I wish she had never slept with his dad, I really do. I would have liked to see where this relationship took them – as well as, Baze’s growing relationship with Sam.
- I was so happy to see Ryan and Cate back on the air together, Baze buying back his bar, and the reappearance of the corn dog sweatshirt (although, I was desperately anxious some red paint would get on it!)
- Glad they mentioned Trey and the trial from the previous episode. I was scared they would just forget about it. Interesting that Trey is out on bail; that trial would have been interesting to see.
- Can’t forget the humor in the show. Little diddies like:  “The fire alarm will wake me up,” “Install a low-jack system in my butt,” and “Little dudes, they love me” were some of my favorites.
- Baze knows how to give a speech. “The point of having kids is to raise them up to be themselves, not you. If you are lucky they learn from your mistakes and turn out better.”
- And I can’t forget Jones’ wisdom:  “Everyone has stuff that no one can see. If you are in high school, I think the most normal thing you could feel is not normal.”

I guess for now, that’s all she wrote. Literally. I’m crossing my fingers (and toes) that we do get to experience another season of Life Unexpected. But if it’s just not to be, I know I will be following its cast and crew wherever they land next. It’s kind of like what Cate said about Lux. If I started watching the show, knowing it would last only two short seasons, I would still have watched it regardless.

Thanks for making my Tuesday nights worthwhile.

Life Unexpected Series Finale: Red Velvet’s Review

Sitting down to watch Life Unexpected last night was bittersweet.  Even though I couldn’t wait to see how everything was going to unfold, I didn’t want this amazing show to end.  I’ve spent so many hours watching (and rewatching) episodes, writing about these characters.  I feel a strong connection to their story.  And when you feel that way about a show, you want to see the characters you’ve grown to love get the ending they deserve (which would’ve been more seasons, damn you CW!).  And I have to say now (before I get into my thoughts on the finale), that I’m happy with how things ended.  More than anything, I wanted to see our favorite family continue to figure things out and see Cate and Baze together (endgame!).  The three of them are the heart of the this show and I got the two things I wanted most by the end.

THE BAD (best to get these out of the way first!):
+ The last hour felt rushed. This is completely, 100% CW’s fault.  So I don’t see this as being a reflection on Liz Tigelaar.  Things needed to get wrapped up.

+ 2 Years Later.  This is going to be on both lists.  But I’m not going to lie, when I saw the “Two years later..” screen, my reaction was not a happy one.  I think I didn’t like the idea of it for two reasons.  One, an ending like that screams SERIES finale, not season, and part of me was still hoping for a season 3.  Secondly, these characters are all so complex and dysfunctional, which is why we love them.  I want them to be happy but it felt almost too neat for characters whose lives have always been so messy.  Would something slightly more ambiguous worked better? Maybe.

+ Not enough Cate/Baze. Sort of an all-around complaint for season 2 (again, CW’s fault).  But when Cate and Baze went to see Eric, I kept thinking how nice it was to see them together.  Being parents together.  Even if we couldn’t see them romantically, they have such great chemistry together whether the scene is about them as family, friends or otherwise.

+ Julia. Including Julia (being predictably pregnant) in the last 10 minutes was a little much.  We saw how she ended up fitting into the end but I didn’t think she was necessary.  She was a character we hardly knew.  I would’ve preferred that extra time being dedicated to more important characters.

THE GOOD (which there was a lot of!):
+ End of the Lux/Eric relationship.  I’ve never hidden my dislike for this pairing but I must say, it was handled really well last night.  Especially from Eric’s point of view.  This whole time we’ve been seeing things from Lux’s perspective and it was good to see Eric feeling torn up about their (inappropriate) relationship.  Even though he’s a completely different person from Lux’s former foster dad - it’s hard not to see some parallels between them.  He’s an older man pursuing a very wrong relationship with a young girl.  And I’m glad that was brought to light.  I did feel for Eric though, you can tell he genuinely cares for Lux.  But in the end, I was happy to see him go.  (Also, I liked that he went to Math to come clean.)

+ Emma & Baze.  Again, I didn’t exactly ‘ship them but I thought they had a lot of cute moments together.  And Emma Caufield was definitely a great addition to the cast.  She was exactly what Baze needed to move on from Cate (not that I wanted this per se) and grow up a bit.  Both actors were pretty amazing in their scenes together.  From him asking her about the affair (there really is no right time to tell your boyfriend that you were sleeping with his dad for 4 years) to their final goodbye - their scenes just oozed with sadness and tension.

+ Cate.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I am totally Team Cate! Shiri Appleby’s acting always blows me away and her emotional scenes almost never fail to make me cry.  You could really feel her frustration at constantly being pushed away by Lux.  During their confrontation at the bar, she said a lot of things I think Lux needed to hear.  That she couldn’t keep apologizing for what she didn’t do, she’s here for her now and most importantly, she’s her mother. I love that she finally sees herself as a loving mother with real maternal instincts (when she confronted Eric later with Baze, she reminded me of a mama bear protecting her cub).  And how sad was the scene at the doctor’s when she found out she miscarried. At first I wondered - why isn’t she reacting more?! But that’s just Cate, she shuts down.  Then later when she cried in Ryan’s arms about wanting the baby and telling Lux she felt broken inside (“like a dud”), I couldn’t help but cry with her.

+ Baze gets his bar back!  Baze’s character has come full circle.  He’s grown up (we all knew he had it in him!) while at the same time, remaining true to himself (him working for his dad never felt right).  My favorite scene of his was near the end when he says to Lux: “I could deal with losing anyone in this world.  My dad, Emma, Cate.  But not you.”  From the start, I’ve always loved their relationship and the finale wouldn’t have felt complete without a heart-to-heart between them.

+ Lux (and Jones).  I was little frustrated with Lux during the finale.  Every time she yelled at Cate or got angry with Baze, I wanted to yell at the TV that her parents love her, she doesn’t need to push them away.  But she’s a teenager, of course she’s going to throw fits and think she knows more than she actually does.  Plus, she just revealed her deeply traumatic past - that’s not something you get over after a couple heartfelt conversations. So as frustrating as it was, it made sense for her to lash out at her parents and hold onto someone she felt understood her.  But I was really glad that by the end she opened up to Cate about Eric and also, opened up to Jones (didn’t expect him to play so much of a role in the finale) about wanting to be normal.  I loved their whole basketball scene together (I just love Jones period).

+ 2 Years Later.  Cate and Baze together, kissing for all to see? Lux calling them Mom and Dad? Lux & Jones? Math getting the girl? How could I not love all that! Lux delivered her (I’m going with Class President) speech beautifully and her mention of “light years” was a nice shout-out to the original series name.  And despite my initial reaction to the fade-to-black-2-years-later screen, once I actually saw it - I couldn’t help but find it heartwarming.  I wanted these characters to find happiness and it seems like they did (though I really want to know how they got there!).

It’s been a long time since a family-oriented show like Life Unexpected has drawn me in so completely.  Nowadays most shows are reboots of old ones, about vampires and werewolves or focus on the mean/popular high school crowds.  That’s why LUX stood out.  It was about this unlikely group of people trying to be a family in their own way.  I have to say, though it can be quite entertaining, I can’t really relate to a girl falling in love with her vampire boyfriend.  But individuals who are dealing with past heartbreaks or disappointments in their lives, trying to figure it all out? That I understand.  And that’s what I’m going to miss most about LUX.  So, even though it was cancelled far too soon, I’m glad we got to experience these two seasons.

Funfetti’s 5 Favorite LUX Moments

It’s an impossible task to choose five favorite moments from Life Unexpected. Only five? I could probably rattle off ten of my favorite Cate & Baze moments if I had to. But I digress. I tried to spread around my LUX love and choose a few different scenes, showcasing various characters. Just to be fair, of course. Reading through our reviews, and the notes I kept when we wrote our original LUX series, it makes me really sad. It’s been almost 10 years since I felt this passionate about a show – the actors, the writing, and the chemistry. Knowing the best is yet to come for this crowd is all I can hope for after the last two episodes air next week. (Unless, of course, by some miracle, we get a third season.)

I hope you enjoy some of the LUX times I hold dearest:

+ Rent Uncollected 1x3: Chaos ensues when Baze’s family accidentally finds out about Lux on the radio. Immediately, viewers are privy to the clash between Baze and his dad and once Cate’s mom and sister are thrown into the mix, drama reaches new heights. Lux is right in the middle of it all, going from no family to an overwhelming amount. I like how early on we see where Baze and Cate’s separate insecurities come from. My second reason for choosing this particular episode was Lux’s protectiveness of Baze. They’ve only just met and already she wants to help him, make him look better in the eyes of his father. I love when she hands “Gramps” the rent money. It’s such a sweet, mature gesture.

+ Father Unfigured 1x12: Cate decides to road trip with Lux to find her estranged father and invite him to the wedding. Lux convinces Baze to join in for the sake of a family trip, when really she is buying her boyfriend time to clean up Baze’s trashed bar. (Still wondering how Baze failed to notice the disaster!) Mixed CDs, corndogs, and the mountains. Seeing this little family on their own was a treat. While this is probably one of my top episodes in the two seasons, my favorite scene was after Cate finds her dad, ditching a trip to her wedding to go fishing. She finally stands up to him, walks away, and there she sees Baze, who had left the night before. She runs to him and he comforts her. The way Lux looks at him while he’s doing that – I think she is aware of just how much he cares for Cate. It just makes my heart ache because I want the two of them together.

+ Love Unexpected 1x13: I’m going to pull a Red Velvet and totally cheat here. Another one of my ultimate bests! Three moments stick out the most. 1) Lux, Cate, and Baze are officially and legally a family. Fern is equipped with a Polaroid camera, and as they embrace for the picture, Cate and Baze are holding hands. Even when they let go and Lux is talking to Fern, they are still holding hands, swinging them back and forth. It’s so natural and sweet. Here I go rooting for them again even though she is getting married in about five minutes. 2) How can I forget Math’s performance of “Opposites Attract” at the rehearsal dinner? Best thing ever. 3) Cate’s voiceover at the end: “When I was a little girl, I thought I understood how things worked. Girls grew up and married boys; fathers walked their daughters down the aisle. There was an order to things. First came love, then came marriage, then came an overpriced, ridiculously complicated baby carriage. But when I grew up, I realized that’s not necessarily how things worked. Girls can marry girls and boys can marry boys. Mothers can walk their daughters down the aisle and kids can come before love and marriage. It’s taken me 32 years to figure out who I wanted to be and what I’ve learned is that it’s a choice that you make every day. About who you want to be and who you want to be it with. It means appreciating what’s happened in your life to bring you to this point and letting go of it. It means being willing to commit with no guarantees. It means knowing and accepting reality, you may just get the fantasy you always dreamed of.”

+ Criminal Incriminated 2x3: This episode has some pretty hilarious moments after Cate eats some of Paige’s “special” banana bread. It’s quite enjoyable when she calls Baze for advice on how to get un-high. Lux also does a few shady things, like when she goes out with Jones just to be in close proximity of some peers who have the answers to her next exam. Sigh. Jones is just so cute in this episode and they go out for pizza. (Jones, I will go get pizza with you anytime.) Anyway, Lux gets caught. Cate and Baze are shocked. Math gives Lux some great advice, which all leads to a great ending. Cate, Baze, Ryan, and Lux playing basketball to Joshua Radin’s tune “A Brand New Day”. It makes me weepy. Ryan and Baze are “on the same team”. It’s just a heartwarming, simple moment between an unconventional family. Loved it.

+ Camp Ungrounded: It’s always fun to have an episode when all the characters are forced to be together. Baze and his new boss/girlfriend, Emma. Ryan and Cate who are fighting. Lux and her secret teacher boyfriend. Math, of course. Tasha and Jones. And some mean girl from the basketball team that I wanted to continually hit. What I adored the most was this new, romantic side of Baze. His breakfast and bed in the beginning of the episode later, and of course, the cutest thing ever – decorating the school bus with candles and lights for Emma. It was nice to see him like this… the person he never got to be with Cate.
